When you swim, you Do something

I just read this great blog post that says it all.

What he says at the end: “As tired as I get, once I climb out of the pool, I’m ready to take on the rest of the day, because I have already shown myself what I’m capable of in the water.”–is something that was true for me even when I was in the early stages of pregnancy and swimming first thing.

My workouts have been on dry land recently for various reasons. I am busy, but getting a routine in where I am conditioning my body pretty hard at least once a week, and trying to do regular pilates, and walking and tae bo. I even pulled out the exercise ball for those days when I don’t really have time to exercise. I bounce on the ball instead of sit in a chair while I homeschool the children. That goes over big, let me tell you. Can you spell distraction?

I’m glad I can do something when I can’t get in the pool. But don’t misunderstand. I am counting the minutes until I can get back in that pool.

What do you do when you can’t swim?

  • water polo

My kids’ swim coach would let them play water polo as a treat. He pulled out the ball and funny swim caps for every pool party as well. The kids would grumble, but they picked it up and played with enthusiasm. The coach was happy, because all the swimming required for water polo would build their endurance while they had fun.

But talk about a country club sport! Even the name of the sport sounds snooty.

But check this out! This is a water polo team from the City Recreation Department of Pittsburgh. The team was so popular this summer that it grew from 24 to 40 kids in a few days. Now, Rec. department. Tomorrow, the Olympics!

  • do we float?

I’m taking an informal survey here. Do you float? Please comment and let me know. Also let me know your ethnicity.

Cullen Jones addresses the issue in a recent article: As for those outlandish claims that Black people aren’t buoyant enough to swim, Jones says it is true that he can’t float. “I literally sink,” Jones said. “But that doesn’t stop me from being an Olympian. I can move very fast on top of the water.”

My daughter says she doesn’t float. Her head is the only thing that doesn’t immediately try to sink. I have parts that are more buoyant than others. My mother was morbidly obese and she floated so well that she could barely keep her feet down in the pool. And I mentioned that I float much better when I’m pregnant.

So what’s the verdict? Let me know. We can figure this out together.

I know. It’s like I don’t have anything to say anymore. It’s becoming swimtv over here. I will be back with more writing soon. I promise. As I was trolling the Internet for news, I came upon this video from CBS news. Check it out and let me know what you think.

  • lifeguard? check

Remember a while back I was talking about my daughter taking lifeguard training?

Well, she passed! “Now I get to sit in the chair and watch. For hours,” she told her younger siblings.

She earned her certification; she didn’t pass the first time around, and redoubled her efforts to pass with flying colors today.

It sure is nice to have a hero in the house.
