Hi Angie,

I will be brief. The situations you described above are very real, and it befuddles me how some Black folks will continue to set low limits for themselves and not explore options when it comes to swimming. Regarding your 5 top reasons why blacks don't swim, I will say these are all excuses, not reasons. I can nit pick the excuses if I so choose, but it is not worth doing. I would much rather see Brothers & Sisters step it up and take ownership and responsibility for their life. Swimming is important. Ignorance of swimming never saved anyone from drowning, and folks have not learned the lesson.

Please do not take my comments personally, I am sure these were not YOUR reasons, but rather a report on what has been said by others.

Keep it up. You are reaching out the right way. And bring your forum to Diversity In Aquatics. It is also needed there (the more educated need to know, too!). Thanks for all you do.

Angie,
You cease to amaze me with such well written articles. You are so "On Your Mark" for the reasons you have stated in this article for the reasons why we, as a people don't swim. I whole-heartedly agree with every point you have stated. I can personally attest to this with both my younger sister and my daughters, who could have awesome swimmers, going on to college with swimming scholarships. Reason number 4, the hair issue, was their biggest downfall. My sister and daughters were getting attention of boys, and decided their hair was a more important factor to getting their attention, than the constant washing out the chlorine from swimming. Good points from all perspectives. Darrick
